Advertisers use many different methods in order to manipulate their audiences. Some approaches they use are the fifteen basic appeals and advertising techniques. The fifteen basic appeals are different ways advertisers play with our emotions. For example, Mucinex ads. Mucinex is a cold and flu medicine used when you are sick. In their commercials, that I have seen many times before while watching TV, they use a character that looks like a green monster. This monster is supposed to represent the congestion one has while they are sick. In these ads, the monster seems as if it is invading your life and once you take Mucinex, that monster is gone. In Mucinex commercials, they use the appeal; need to aggress. Basically they are tapping into the unhealthy person's emotions, trying to display the strong need to get rid of that person's sickness. The ads show the person getting angry and after they take Mucinex, the monster is gone and they look as if they defeated and took control of their unwell state of being.
This was just one example of an advertiser using an emotional appeal and there are many more like this. Some other appeals that are often used are: the need to feel safe, usually used in insurance commercials, the need for nurture, often used in laundry detergent ads, and the need for affiliation, which is the most often used method, where the advertiser makes you feel that if you do not have this product, you will not fit in with everyone else. Advertisers have a way of presenting themselves to their audience that force the viewer to make them reflect on themselves and their own emotional state. This is the best thing about these ads, they can manipulate you until you have to invest in the product they are trying to get you to buy.
Another approach advertisers use are advertising techniques. Advertising techniques are used to attract attention, spark interest, to explain ideas, trigger emotions, initiate action and influence what people think, feel or remember. You see, advertisers are very smart when they are creating a commercial or ad. They know what the audience wants and what they need. One technique advertisers use are facts and figures. This is often used in data provider's commercials. For example, T-Mobile often will show an outline of the US and there will be areas where T-Mobile is used the most. This displays how many people use T-Mobile throughout the US, trying to persuade the audience to join in with this large number of people, using the emotional appeal of the need for affiliation.
Many advertisers are smart in creating their ads, which is why we see so many ads around us on the daily basis. We see them while walking down the street, playing games on our phones or even searching the web. They know when and how to attract our attention.
